Exeter
on the Devon Guide
Exeter
is Devon's "capital". Exeter is a bustling and lively
city with great character that has rebuilt itself since the World
War II bombing destroyed much of the city centre. The city, built
high on a plateau above the River Axe, is encircled by substantial
sections of Roman and medieval wall. The street plan of Exeter has
changed very little since the Romans first laid out what is not
the High Street.

Exeter
Cathedral, with its flanking Norman towers is one of Exeter's
most recognisable landmarks.
The history
of the whole region is covered in Exeter's fine museum.
Away from
the centre of Exeter, The Quay is the starting point for canalside
walks and bike rides during the day, and is a venue for pubs
and clubs in the evening. |
